Value Drawing

Start with a simple fruit photo.  Use Google fruit photo.

To save with an iPad hold your finger down firmly and wait for the command screen save as.  It should now be in your camera roll.

If save will not work for you a screen shot is possible. To do this use both buttons at the same time.

This can be edited if you wish in your camera roll.

In camera roll choose edit in the top right corner and choose the crossbar to crop the image.

Use Black and White Camera App to  create Values.

Click the apple to begin, then find your fruit photo.

It should look like this when it is loaded.

Here is a good version to draw from.

Click the open folder, and original image to save your  value photo to work from.

Working With Ampersand Claybord

Ampersand Claybord is very versatile as a way to create linear texture and can be used with inks. watercolor and acrylic paint.  These three works started on white claybord and inked solid black with a thin layer of India ink.  Then the design was traced on using a graphite paper.  This can be made with some effort with your pencil or using graphite powder if  you have not purchased graphite paper.

I used an exact, scratchboard tools a linoleum carving knife to carve my lines.

After making the initial drawing carving, then textures and hatch marks can be added as desired.  Finally, color can be added with paint, markers and colored pencils as desired.

Star Crossed Cats, five claybords with  ink and marker on wooden textured frame, 11 x 14.

Steampunk Cat, three claybords with  ink and gold Golden Open paint on wooden textured frame, 11 x 14.

Gear Wise, four claybords with  ink wooden textured frame, 11 x 14.
